Maybe you hear it when you look in the mirror. Maybe it shows up when you scroll and see everyone else's highlight reel. Maybe it sounds like an old voice from your past: you're not smart enough, not pretty enough, not spiritual enough, not wanted.
So you work harder. You try to earn a little more approval at work, at home, even at church. But no matter how much you do, the question never quite goes away. Who am I, really? And do I matter?
If that question has been sitting heavy on your heart, here is good news. God has already answered it, and His answer is not based on your performance.
"So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them." (Genesis 1:27, NIV)
Before you ever did anything right or wrong, God made you, and He made you to reflect Him. Your worth was not invented by a job title, a relationship, a bank account, or a number of followers. It was placed in you by your Creator.
David understood this when he prayed, "I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well" (Psalm 139:14, NIV). And when people judge by the outside, remember what God told Samuel: "People look at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart" (1 Samuel 16:7, NIV).
As an Assemblies of God church, New Walk holds to the 16 Fundamental Truths. Fundamental Truth 4, The Fall of Man, teaches that "man was created good and upright; for God said, 'Let us make man in our image, after our likeness.'" It also teaches that man "by voluntary transgression fell," which brought spiritual death, "which is separation from God."
That is honest about both sides of the story. You were made with great dignity, and you also live in a broken world with a sinful heart, like every one of us. "For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God" (Romans 3:23, NIV). But God did not leave us there. "God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8, NIV). Your value was proven at the cross.
In the message "Stop Feeling Like An Imposter" (watch it here), we looked at Joshua 1:1 to 9 and at people like Moses, Gideon, and Joshua, who all wrestled with fear and doubt. God told Joshua again and again to be strong and courageous. If God had to say it more than once, it means fear and insecurity are part of the journey, not proof that you don't belong.
"Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go" (Joshua 1:9, NIV). Your confidence does not have to come from your own strength. It can rest on God's Word and His presence with you.
1. Name the lie and replace it with truth. Write down the words you keep telling yourself, like "I'm a failure" or "I'm not wanted." Next to each one, write what God says. "See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!" (1 John 3:1, NIV).
2. Start each day in God's Word, not on your phone. Before you check messages or social media, read a few verses and let God speak first. "Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind" (Romans 12:2, NIV).
3. Step into what God made you for. You were not saved just to sit still. "For we are God's handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do" (Ephesians 2:10, NIV). Pick one way to serve or encourage someone this week. Identity grows when we walk in it.
Father, thank You that You made me in Your image and that You know me completely. I confess that I have looked for my worth in the wrong places, and I have believed lies about who I am. Thank You for loving me while I was still a sinner and for sending Jesus to die for me. If I have never given my life to You, I do that now. I turn from my sin, I believe Jesus died for me and rose again, and I receive Him as my Savior and Lord. Make me a new creation. Holy Spirit, remind me every day that I am Your child. Help me walk with courage in what You made me to be. In Jesus' name, amen.
