When Your Teen Feels Far Away

It used to be easy. They ran to the door when you came home. They told you everything about their day. Now the bedroom door stays closed, the earbuds stay in, and a simple question gets a one word answer.

If you are raising a teenager, you know the mix of love and worry that keeps you up at night. You wonder who they are talking to online, what they believe, and whether anything you taught them is sticking. Some days you feel more like a referee than a parent. Some days you just feel tired.

You are not the only one, and you are not without help. God cares about your son or daughter even more than you do, and He has not left you to figure this out alone.

God Gave Us a Guide

Teenagers are asking big questions. Who am I? What is true? Does God even care? Those questions are not a threat to faith. They are an open door. And God has given every family a trustworthy place to find answers: His Word.

Long ago, God told His people how faith gets passed from one generation to the next: "These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up" (Deuteronomy 6:6 to 7, NIV).

Notice where it starts. Before God's Word can be impressed on our kids, it has to be on our own hearts. Teens can spot a script a mile away, but they rarely ignore a parent who truly lives what they believe.

What We Believe

As an Assemblies of God church, New Walk holds to the 16 Fundamental Truths. Fundamental Truth 1, The Scriptures Inspired, teaches that "the Scriptures, both the Old and New Testaments, are verbally inspired of God and are the revelation of God to man, the infallible, authoritative rule of faith and conduct."

That means the Bible is not just good advice for your family. It is God speaking. Paul reminded young Timothy that "from infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus" (2 Timothy 3:15, NIV). Then he added, "All Scripture is God breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness" (2 Timothy 3:16, NIV). Timothy's faith had been planted at home by his mother and grandmother (2 Timothy 1:5). The same Word can shape your teen today.

Build a Family Altar

In the message "How a Family Altar Sermon Changes EVERYTHING" (watch it here), part of our Family Vacation series, we looked at why a family altar matters: a simple, regular time when the family comes together for prayer, worship, and the Bible. It does not have to be long or perfect. It just has to be real.

With teenagers, that might look like a short conversation over dinner, a verse shared in the car, or praying together before a big test. Joshua made a decision for his whole house: "But as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD" (Joshua 24:15, NIV). You can make that same decision today.

3 Practical Steps for This Week

1. Listen more than you lecture. Ask one open question and then really listen, without fixing or correcting right away. "Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry" (James 1:19, NIV). Teens open up to parents who make it safe to talk.

2. Put God's Word where your family lives. Choose one verse for the week, text it to your teen, or read it together at dinner. Try this one: "How can a young person stay on the path of purity? By living according to your word" (Psalm 119:9, NIV). Ask, "What do you think that means for us?"

3. Believe in who God is making them to be. Tell your teen something specific you see God doing in them. Remind them, "Don't let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity" (1 Timothy 4:12, NIV). Correct with love, and "do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord" (Ephesians 6:4, NIV).

If Your Teen Has Wandered

Maybe your son or daughter has walked away from God, or from you. Do not give up. Remember the father in Jesus's story of the prodigal son: "while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him" (Luke 15:20, NIV). Keep praying, keep the door open, and keep loving. God is still at work.

A Prayer for Parents of Teens

Father, thank You for the children You have trusted to me. You know how much I love them, and You love them even more. Forgive me for the times I have been impatient or distant. Put Your Word on my heart first, so I can live it in front of my family. Give me wisdom to listen, courage to lead, and grace to love well. Protect my teen's mind and heart, and draw them close to You. If I have never given my own life to You, I do it now. I turn from my sin, I believe Jesus died for me and rose again, and I receive Him as my Savior and Lord. Let my house serve You. In Jesus's name, amen.

No te rindas.
