You told yourself this would be the last time. The last drink, the last late night scroll, the last cigarette, the last bet, the last time you lose your temper or open that website. And then it happened again. If you are stuck in a habit you hate, you probably know the heavy mix of frustration and shame that follows.
You are not the only one. Even the apostle Paul wrote honestly about this struggle: "For I do not do the good I want to do, but the evil I do not want to do, this I keep on doing" (Romans 7:19, NIV). Wanting to change is a good start, but most of us have learned that willpower alone is not enough. The good news is that God does not leave you to fight alone.
"So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed." (John 8:36, NIV)
In the New Walk message "Understanding True Freedom: A Biblical Perspective on Living Free" (watch it here), we looked at Galatians 5 and the difference between false freedom and true freedom. The world says freedom means doing whatever you want. But anything you cannot stop doing is not freedom. It is a chain.
Paul wrote, "It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery" (Galatians 5:1, NIV). Jesus did not die only to forgive your past. He died and rose again to break the power that sin and addiction hold over your life today.
The message also reminded us that staying free is not automatic. It takes intentional steps. Paul gives us the key: "So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh" (Galatians 5:16, NIV). Walking is one step at a time. You do not have to win the whole battle today. You only need to take the next step with God.
And when you slip, remember this: "Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus" (Romans 8:1, NIV). Shame tells you to hide. Grace invites you to come back to God, get up, and keep walking.
As an Assemblies of God church, New Walk holds to the 16 Fundamental Truths. Fundamental Truth 9, Sanctification, teaches that "sanctification is an act of separation from that which is evil, and of dedication unto God." It also says, "By the power of the Holy Spirit we are able to obey the command: 'Be ye holy, for I am holy.'"
That is real hope for anyone fighting a habit. You are not changed by trying harder on your own. The Statement explains that sanctification grows as we recognize our union with Christ in His death and resurrection and offer every part of our lives "continually to the dominion of the Holy Spirit." Romans says it this way: "Count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus" (Romans 6:11, NIV). God is at work in you, "for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose" (Philippians 2:13, NIV).
1. Name it and bring it into the light. Tell God honestly what has a hold on you. Then tell one trusted person. "Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed" (James 5:16, NIV). If your habit is an addiction that affects your health, it is wise and faithful to also reach out to a doctor, counselor, or recovery group. God often works through people.
2. Plan your way out before the moment comes. Think about the times, places, and feelings that usually lead you back. Remove what you can, and decide ahead of time what you will do instead: pray, call a friend, take a walk, open your Bible. "And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it" (1 Corinthians 10:13, NIV).
3. Fill your mind with something better. Habits leave an empty space when they go. Fill it with worship, Scripture, and healthy friendships. "Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind" (Romans 12:2, NIV). Try reading one chapter of Galatians each day this week.
Lord Jesus, You know the habit that keeps pulling me back. I am tired of fighting it in my own strength. I bring it into Your light today. Thank You that there is no condemnation for those who are in You. Break every chain, fill me with Your Holy Spirit, and give me the power to say no to what hurts me and yes to what honors You. Lead me to the people who can walk with me. If I have never given my life to You, I do that now. I turn from my sin, I believe You died for me and rose again, and I receive You as my Savior and Lord. Set me free, and help me stay free. In Jesus' name, amen.

Y volvió a pasar.
Hazme libre y ayúdame a permanecer libre. En el nombre de Jesús, amén.
