The 3am Mind

Maybe you know the feeling. The house is quiet, everyone is asleep, and your mind is running. The bills. The diagnosis. The job that feels shaky. The teenager who barely talks to you anymore. You replay yesterday and rehearse tomorrow, and somehow you end up more tired than when you lay down.

If that is you, you are not alone, and you are not a bad Christian. Anxiety is one of the most common struggles in our community and in our church family. The good news is that God does not shame anxious people. He invites them close.

What God Says About Worry

The apostle Paul wrote these words from a prison cell, not a vacation spot:

"Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." (Philippians 4:6 to 7, NIV)

Notice that Paul does not say "stop feeling anxious." He gives us somewhere to put the weight. Peter says the same thing: "Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you." (1 Peter 5:7, NIV)

Jesus Himself said: "Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid." (John 14:27, NIV)

Seek Him, Not Just the Answer

Pastor Rob recently preached a message called "Are You Seeking God or Just His Blessings?" (watch it here). That question goes right to the heart of worry. Often we pray only about the outcome we want: fix the money, fix the test result, fix the relationship. When the answer does not come fast, anxiety grows.

Jesus pointed us to a different starting place: "But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own." (Matthew 6:33 to 34, NIV)

When God Himself becomes what we are seeking, our peace no longer depends on how fast the problem is solved. It rests on who is with us in the middle of it.

What We Believe

As an Assemblies of God church, New Walk holds to the 16 Fundamental Truths. Two of them speak straight to the anxious heart.

Fundamental Truth 2, The One True God, teaches that God has revealed Himself as the eternal "I AM," "the Creator of heaven and earth and the Redeemer of mankind." When God told Moses, "I am who I am" (Exodus 3:14, NIV), He was saying He is present tense. He is not stuck in your past regrets or waiting nervously in your future. He is with you now.

Fundamental Truth 7, The Baptism in the Holy Spirit, reminds us that God gives "the enduement of power for life and service." The Holy Spirit is not only for Sunday worship. He is power for a Tuesday night when your thoughts are racing and you need strength you do not have on your own.

3 Practical Steps for This Week

1. Name it and hand it over. Grab a piece of paper and write down every worry on your mind. Then pray over the list one item at a time and say, "Lord, I give this to You." That is what casting your anxiety looks like.

2. Add thanks to your requests. Paul says "with thanksgiving." For every worry on your list, write one thing you are grateful for. Gratitude does not deny the problem. It reminds your heart that God has been faithful before.

3. Live one day at a time, and do not do it alone. Jesus said each day has enough trouble of its own. Focus on today's next step. Then tell a trusted friend, a small group leader, or one of our pastors what you are carrying. Anxiety grows in isolation and shrinks in community. If worry is affecting your sleep, health, or daily life, talking with a doctor or counselor is also a wise and faithful step.

A Prayer for Peace

Father, You are the great I AM. You are here with me right now. I give You the worries I have been carrying: my family, my finances, my health, my future. I choose to seek You first, not just the answers I want. Holy Spirit, fill me with Your power and guard my heart and mind with the peace of Jesus that goes beyond understanding. Help me take today one step at a time. In Jesus' name, amen.

(Juan 14:27, RVR1960)

Busca a Dios, no solo la respuesta

El Pastor Rob predicó recientemente un mensaje titulado "Are You Seeking God or Just His Blessings?" (¿Buscas a Dios o solo Sus bendiciones?)

2. Agrega gratitud a tus peticiones.
